Three recent studies have shown that the use of alpha-lipoic acid, a potent antioxidant found in many foods, to help in the cure and prevention of fat accumulation in the liver. Fatty liver disease, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, is a common liver ailment that can lead to diseases of the liver that are more severe. Alpha-lipoic acid neutralizes free radicals and is recognized to protect cells from damage, and that includes the ever-vital liver cells.

There is strong evidence that alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) assists with the treatment of type 2 diabetes and can improve insulin resistance. But for our discussion, we will cite its importance to the liver with its antioxidant properties that neutralize cell-damaging free radicals. ALA has the unique characteristic of being both fat-soluble and water-soluble and is therefore referred to as a universal antioxidant. This allows ALA to offer free radical protection for both inside and outside the liver cell protection, as well as binding with free radicals in both lean and fatty livers.

We can get ALA in foods, but these foods normally contain small amounts, which is why many people look to supplementation. Some common foods are tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, beets, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Another good source is red meat, and especially organ meat. Side effects normally are considered uncommon, but people with diabetes should take care, as it can lower blood sugar. Since there is still a lack of concrete evidence about its safety, it is not recommended that pregnant women or children take ALA supplements.

So if you have decided on using supplements, what are some of the things you should be looking for? Unless it is otherwise specified, lipoic acid supplements are an equal mixture of natural R lipoic acid and synthetic S lipoic acid. It’s cheaper, but the S form can act in opposition to the active R+ form. So scientists have been able to isolate just the natural R+, and it has proven to outperform the other signs in clinical tests. The one thing you must be aware of is its much higher cost and the fact that it will deteriorate rapidly if left unrefrigerated.

R-Alpha lipoic acid may well be one of the keys to staving off the aging process. Mitochondrial function is the energy that drives the cells, and it is the major source of free radical activity in the body. As we age, mitochondria become less efficient, producing less energy, and creating more free radicals. That of course is the main reason why we experience less energy as we age. The only proven way to slow down this process is by restricting our calorie consumption and make certain we are getting adequate nutrition. R-Alpha lipoic acid has been shown in tests to have similar effects on calorie restriction.

So obviously by taking these supplements we can allow our diets to suffer and expect liver health. It will only help to protect against the development of fatty liver disease when used in conjunction with a healthy diet.
