Fish oil and flaxseed are both very high in essential Omega 3 fatty acids, but flaxseed offers a great alternative for vegetarians. It is also a good choice for these who have high blood pressure or simply prefer it to fish oil. Fish oil contains the two fatty acids EPA and DHA. Flaxseed only contains ALA but then the body converts it to EPA and DHA. Some people including those who are diabetic or who suffer from Schizophrenia aren’t able to break ALA down so they should use fish oil or take EPA and DHA supplements.
Anyone who has high blood pressure should use flaxseed oil instead of fish oil due to the amount of mercury it contains. This can result in the blood pressure increasing instead of benefiting from the Omega 3 fatty acids in the fish oil. Those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome should also use flaxseed oil as it tends to work better than fish oil. Some of the side effects of fish oil can feel like IBS for them anyway.

The decision to choose either flaxseed oil or fish oil supplements is a personal choice, but most vegetarians will prefer to use the flaxseed if their health-related issues aren’t a reason not to.
